Welcome to the ISDF DataBase

The Invertebrate Systematic and Diversity Facility (ISDF) of the Dept. of Zoology, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka houses expert identified insect specimens collected during the Smithsonian - Sri Lanka Insect Survey conducted during 1978-1998 by the  late Dr. Karl Krombein  of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington. The collection holds 1806 species of insects in 157 families in 14 orders. This expert identified valuable collection has limited access. This collection can now be accessed online for viewing and would be of help in identifying similar unidentified specimens. The database provides information obtained from specimen labels pertaining to type of specimen, collection locality, method of collection etc. The digital images of species provided give two views of a specimen along with the actual size of the specimen for use in identifying unknown specimens. Published literature on new species and previously unrecorded species  in the collection has been cited.

The Invertebrate Systematics and Diversity Facility (ISDF), of the Department of Zoology houses the Smithsonion Insect collection made during the Smithsonion - Sri Lanka Insect project conducted form 1978   - 1998.  A total of 3098 insect specimens representing 1806 species in 14 Orders are included in the collection.

The development of the database was supported by a grant awarded from the National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka
